Thought of the Week

  • "Having OCD is like being allergic to life - every waking moment is spent in a state of mental hyper-sensitivity.”

Why am I returning to this blog after so long?

During this next year, this blog will "document" Devin's OCD, and the improvements she makes. In no way is this blog meant to make anyone feel sorry for our trials. We know that trials are merely blessings in wolves' clothing. Because any improvements will be minor and subtle as the days go by, I want to write it all down so that I can look back and see how far Devin has come. If you are a first-time reader, I suggest you begin by reading this post. It will give you some background and show you a starting point. Comments are welcome, but please be kind. This is not an easy illness to deal with. We're all just doing the best we can.

Year-End Family Newsletter

Happy New Year Everyone!

It’s been a great year for us!

Devin, 4, has been learning all her letters and sounds. She is quite good on the computer already, and continues to display an interest in sports and music. She loves balls of any kind, and sometimes even sleeps with them. She also sleeps with her cowgirl hat and stick horse that she got for her birthday. Last night she slept with play dough. She loves the guitar she got for Christmas, too. Devin developed pneumonia back in June and had to stay at Primary Children’s Hospital for a week. Consequently, Mom had to stay there with her. She was sent home with an oxygen tank, but she developed sneaky ways to take it off during the night, and after a week of sleep deprivation for Mom, Dad and Devin, the doctor said we could take her off of it.

Jadyn, 6, has really become helpful this year. She helps take out garbages, do dishes, and sweep. She has been taking piano lessons for several months, and seems to have an aptitude for it. She is an awesome reader and a math wiz. She even earned an award (an autograph bear) by being the fastest and most accurate with her addition and subtraction, something her teacher said he’d never seen in all his years. Several months ago, Jadyn and Devin were playing and Devin’s chin connected with Jadyn’s eye, resulting in a nice shiner that lasted 2 weeks! She continues to love swimming, and she learned how to ride her bike without training wheels this summer.

Darin finished our basement this summer. He did a great job. He did everything himself, except the carpet, some plumbing and the painting. His health is much improved. He reached his 1st birthday (1 year anniversary after his bone marrow transplant) on Thanksgiving. We had so much to be thankful for this year. He completed his 1 year post-transplant doctor appointments this week, and has been doing terrific. Just today he started his first round of immunizations, and has been complaining that his butt hurts. He has been working on his Masters this year. He has finished all his classes and is now working on his final research project. He hopes to be finished by summer, though we’re not holding our breath.

Katherine has continued to teach and be the department head at Granger High School. She is considering some major changes in the near future. We will let you know when the time comes. She continues to teach Gospel Doctrine at church, and is gearing up to teach the Old Testament again in the new year. Katherine helped with the basement where she could, putting up the dry wall, taping and mudding. She also continues to host what used to be called the Relief Society book club, but now is just called the Book Club due to some changes in Relief Society. She likes to bake, and often shares the goods with neighbors.

We’re looking forward for a great New Year and wish all of you the same!
